She recently held the position of Assistant Director General for Culture at UNESCO Paris and was a member of the World Commission on Culture and Development and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the World Culture Report.

Since March 2007, she is a member of the Committee for Development Policies of the Economic and Social Commission of the United Nations.

She has held several notable international positions: President, International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, Vice-President for the Society for International Development (SID), Steering Committee Member for Development Alternatives for Women in a New Era (DAWN).

Publications include "Culture and Globalization" in UNDP Working Papers of the Human Development Report, 1999.
