In 1984, convened a meeting of women from the South, to consider developing a feminist perspective on development from the South - leading to the founding of DAWN,

Was a Lecturer, later senior fellow at the Delhi School of Economics

Was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award from Government of India .

Has held Fellowships at various Universities. One of two women, to receive recognition at Beijing 1995, the Bradford Morse award.
