Research interest include culture, religion, feminism, civil society and the impact of the satellite on the Arab world

Won the Asturias Prize 2003 and the Erasmus Prize 2004

Books have been published in twenty-six countries

Publications include "Les Sindbads marocains" (2004), "Scheherazade Goes West" (2001) "Islam and Democracy (1992), "Forgotten Queens of Islam" (1990)
